How to Find the Right Roman Blinds For Your Windows

Are you thinking about changing the look of your window dressing? You should consider roman blinds, which may also be called roman shades. Roman blinds are a very popular choice because they are simple to make and install and do not require the same hardware that a roller shade or a venetian blind does. Here is some information on how to choose the right ones to fit your needs.

At its most basic, a roman blind is a rectangle of lined fabric which hangs in the window. It is given structure by a series of thin slats which extend the width of the blind. These slats are joined together by a cord that, when pulled, draws the roman blind up in order to let in light. Many people find it easy to make roman shades themselves and will often do so in fabrics which match or compliment their interior.

You can make a roman blind on your own quite easily, or you can purchase ready-made roman blinds over the Internet and in fabric and interior decorating stores. They are very popular because they have very clean lines and, despite being used for many years, are still quite modern and contemporary in appearance. Therefore, they suit minimalist interiors very well.

When you go to purchase your roman blinds, there are a few things that you need to consider. How do you use the room that the blinds will be in? Will the blinds be mainly decorative, as they would in a living room, or functional as they would be in a bedroom. This can be important since it can affect the fabrics and linings that you select.

If you are putting your roman blind in a room like a bedroom, where people are sleeping, you will want to make sure that you select a blind with a light blocking liner, or even a blackout liner. The choice of these will depend on how critical it is that the light be blocked out. A regular bedroom may do fine with a light blocking liner, but if you work shift work and are trying to sleep in the daytime, you may want a total blackout liner. Keep in mind that if you select a blind with an insulating liner you can actually help reduce your heating and cooling costs and drop your energy bills as well. This is because the liner will help prevent the loss of heated or cooled air through the window when the blinds are down.

The width of your window may determine whether you need to have a blind custom made. If your window is extremely wide, you will probably need to have the blinds custom made. You may also need to have two blinds made so that the mechanism which draws the blind up and down will work properly. If you are dealing with a wide window in a bedroom, you may want to choose another type of window dressing. This is because light can come in through the line between the blinds, and this can disturb your sleep.

Roman blinds are not for every window. If you have an irregularly shaped window, a roman blind may not be the best choice. This is because a roman blind is rectangular and, while it can be cut to fit most windows, if you have a transom window that is rounded at the top, you will either be forced to hide the shape of the window or hang the roman shade so that it hangs below the arched portion of the window. This can look unusual and let in light.

Roman blinds are wonderful ways to finish windows. They are beautiful, modern and can easily be customized to match your style of decorating. It is these reasons, among others, that they continue to be popular year after year.

DIY and Custom Roman Blinds

If you are thinking of something that will add a new dimension to your otherwise dreary room, Roman blinds can be the solution you are looking for. This window treatment option has been in existence for hundreds of years and has been used by decorators who want balance, a dash of color, and an overall beautiful effect for windows in a space. Roman blinds lend an area a sense of style, comfort, and a measure of elegance that only Roman and Mediterranean design components can offer.

Roman blinds are readily available everywhere. You can purchase them in the nearest store in your area that sells window treatments like blinds and curtains. Also, these stores offer implements that you can use if you plan to make Roman blinds as a do-it-yourself project. Yes, Roman blinds are that easy to do that you can actually make them yourself. If you like shopping in the internet, then you can also look for websites that sell blinds. With both stores and in the internet, you actually have to option to talk to a professional maker of blinds and have something custom-made according to your specifications. This should be handy in cases where you have a Roman blind idea on your mind but you can’t find anything that matches your specs. This option should also be great if you don’t really trust your DIY skills.

So, why would you opt for DIY or custom-made Roman blinds? Consider these reasons:
· You can choose whether your blind would be lined or unlined.
Ready-made blinds are usually in the extreme when it comes to the lining of roman blinds. They either come with thick lining or no lining at all. In this case, you can’t really manipulate the amount of sunlight which passes through the Roman blind. That would rather be sad because part of the charm of a Roman blind is the warm hint of light that can enter a room with the right thickness of lining. With a custom-made Roman blind, you can choose a lining that would suit your preference. Furthermore, some residential communities place restrictions on the tint or covering that your windows can be treated to, so having custom-made blinds can make sure that you incorporate these rules to your blinds.

· The fit is it!
Ill-fitting shades can prove to be disasters for your design aesthetic. Just imagine a person wearing pants that end above the ankle – awkward, isn’t it? That’s exactly what a window looks like when it has blinds that are too short or too small. Blinds that fit well makes the whole window look balanced, and thus, blends well with the whole design equilibrium of the space. With packaged blinds, you cannot be too sure of their exact fit, even if the package matches your window. If you let a professional window treatment maker or you yourself measure the fabric, what usually will come out is a blind that just fits perfectly. You’ll notice how smart your window looks, as opposed to a sloppy look that ill-fitting blinds exude.

Those are only two reasons why custom-made blinds should be right for you. Consider it and you’ll be glad you did.

Making Roman Blinds For Your Bedroom

Roman blinds can add a nice look to any bedroom and you can give them a custom touch by making them in fabric to match your bedding or other décor in the room. These blinds are basically a panel of fabric with laths encased in channels and cording to draw up the lathes so it simply takes a bit of sewing know how to make them.

When selecting material for your blinds, go with something that is a medium weight and match the colors to those in your bedroom.

Here's what you need:

Medium weight fabric

Curtain lining fabric

1/2" wood laths

2 X 1 wood batton to fit across the window

Plastic rings

Angle brackets

Screw eyes

Nylon cord

Tools such as a square, ruler, pencil, staple gun, cleat and screws

First, measure the window height and width from inside the casing. Cut the roman blinds material 2 ½" wider and 4" longer than that measurement. Cut the curtain lining fabric the same width as the blinds fabric and 2" longer.

Now you need to decide how many pleats or the size of the pleats. Typically, a roman blind has 6" pleats so you'll want to divide the length of your fabric - 4" by 12 since 6" pleats would have the channels spaced 12" apart. So, if you are making roman blinds for a window that is 48", you should have cut the fabric to 52" (since you added 4" to the measurement). Then you have to divide the original 48" by 12 (the size of each channel) for a total of 4. So you will have 4 pleats in your blinds.

Mark the lining 1 ¼" up from the bottom edge with a hem line and 2" down from the top edge. To mark your channels for the roman blinds, make 2 lines spaced 2 ½" apart starting 6" above the hem line. After you make the first set of line, measure up another 12" and make another set, again spaced 2 ½" apart. Form the channels by bringing the 2 lines together, pinning them and then sewing them to form the channel for the lath.

To assemble the roman blind, put the blind fabric and lining with right sides facing each other and lower edges matching. Stitch the lower edges together. Turn right side out and sew across the blind at the hem line. Pin the lining and roman blind fabric together along the channels and stitch them together. Baste and stitch the sides together, making sure not to stitch up the channels.

To make the pleats in the roman blinds, slip the laths into the channels and slip stitch the openings. Sew the plastic rings on the lining 4" in from the ends of the laths on each side. Cut the 2 pieces of nylon cord twice the length of the blind plus the width. Tie a cord onto each of the bottom rings and thread up through the rest of the rings to the top of the roman blinds and let hang loose.

Now you can hang your masterpieces! Attach the top part to the batton (you can use a staple gun). Now put the angle brackets at the top of the window and attach the batton to the brackets.
Attach a screw eye to the batton on each side above the rows of plastic rings. Thread the loose cord through the screw eyes and over to the right side of the window. Slip a lath into the very bottom of the blind to finish it off.

Viola! Now you have custom Roman blinds for your bedroom!

The Different Types of Roman Blinds

If you're looking for sophistication and elegance you'll find it with roman blinds. These blinds are popularly made from fabric and they come in a variety of color, design, texture and size depending on what you want. If you do not want the trouble that comes with installing heavy draperies or curtains, roman blinds are the best option for you and your home.

A roman blind is versatile when it comes to adding style to your house. A simple patterned blind will make a simple accent piece while a heavily patterned one will make a statement. Light and soft fabrics provide a summer feel and a blind that comes in warm colors can give a fuzzy warm feeling to your home which is perfect for those cooler months.

According to Blind Shape

Roman blinds have flat panels that extend all the way downward. There are two types of blinds, according to the shape or the fold that you can see when you draw up the blinds. The first, more common style folds straight when lowered and neatly folds up when pulled up, where it lies flat. The second style of Roman blind is a teardrop shape. This blind doesn't lie flat when you pull it up but rather it has a curved or cuffed hem. It makes a loop or teardrop shape when drawn up. I prefer this style, especially for a bedroom or living room, as it gives the room a softer and more elegant appearance. This style needs a more flimsy or fine material than the regular classic type.

According to Color

You may match your blinds with the style and interior of your room. As the blinds are available in all colors it is easy to mix and match.

According to Texture

Blinds are available in many different fabrics: from canvas, denim, soft fabric, flimsy, wispy, denim and leather, even satin. The texture of the fabric depends on what type of look you want to achieve. A softer texture is required for a teardrop style; a stiffer fabric texture is needed to provide you with a stiff horizontal style.

Some Drawbacks

A roman blind isn't for every home. It may be inappropriate if you have a rustic home which will look better with a wooden venetian blind. They're also not that convenient for covering wide windows such as using them for conservatory blinds, as they're difficult to pull up. In that situation, you may want to buy two blinds and mount them side by side, for ease of use.

Selecting Proper Window Roman Blinds

There are many roman blind options at your disposal to choose from. While the choice you go for depends on your taste, it is important to consider the taste of others as well. For window roman blinds, go for makes and designs that will be appreciated by all the family members. You can choose from the following:

1. Drawpull. These have a cord that you use to move the blind, either to the left or to the right. The cord comes with a cleat that is fixed either on the window or wall and which the cord is tied on.

2. Bordered blinds. You can decide to have roman blinds with neat borders. The borders can be made all round the blind, along the vertical sides only. In most cases, the vertical border width measure between 2 and 5 cm while for the bottom between 5 and 20 cm deep. The border fabric used must be in contrast to that of the blind. You have the option of choosing your own colour.

3. Band. This resembles the border, the only difference being that a band of different colour and fabric from that of the blind is fixed running across the blind. The band is fixed mostly at the bottom in width of 20 cm. It is fixed about 15 cm from the bottom edge.

4. ZigZag. You can have the bottom of your blind in a zigzag design to enhance its look. This can be in the same colour and fabric as the blind or in a different colour and fabric. The zigzag width is usually 3 to 5 cm.

5. Eyelet bottom blind. You can have the bottom of your blind made with eyelets to let in some amount of light when in use. The eyelets do measure 4 cm in diameter and start at about 5 cm from the edge of the bottom. Eyelets punched appropriately at the bottom of a blind create a beautiful look. However, blinds with eyelets may not be suitable for bedroom windows.

6. Standard lined blinds. You can choose to have blinds with standard lining. These allow in some light that you may need since they are made of cotton sateen, which is very thin. These are suitable for almost all windows and doors except the bedroom.

7. Blackout lining. This is good for your bedroom. It is made of cotton that has been treated to make it lightproof. You can also use it in the living room, depending on your situation. Unlike standard lined blinds, blackout lined blinds are slightly heavier.

8. Interlined blinds. You can choose to have blinds that are interlined. These do not need to block out the light completely; they still allow in some light but are more warm and softer than single-lined blinds.

You do not need to stick to the ready-made roman blinds in the market. You have the option of giving instructions on how you want your blinds to be made. This includes the fabric you prefer, colour and size. You are also at liberty to specify the accessories to be used.

How to Make Roman Blinds in 10 Easy Steps

1. Measure your window width and window height or (drop), traditionally a roman blind is installed on the architrave or above the window, if installing above the window, then the roman blind should have approximately 200mm added to the height.

2. In the next step we work out how much material will be required, there is a set formula to do this for any window covering or roman blind. Use the following formula - The width of the window divided by the width of the material.

Ie... 2000mm window width divided by 1200mm material width = 1.66, this figure is telling us we require 1.6 widths of material, you always mark up from 1.6 to the next full width, ie in this case will be 2 widths.

3. We know we need 2 widths of the material, so whatever the finished drop of your blind will be, ie 2100mm you need to add 400mm onto this measurement for allowances. The finished material for your window covering will be 2 widths x 2500mm = a total of 5metres

4. Cut your material into 2 lengths of 2500mm length and sew together side by side, you should now have a piece of material 2400mm wide x 2500mm drop

5. Generally the spacing between each panel on a roman blind or roman shade is approximately 300mm, the only exception to this is the top panel which needs to be longer then all the remaining panels , this allows for the roman blind to stack up underneath the top panel.

6. Divide the height of the roman blind by 300mm = 7 panels , now we need to make sure that the top panel will be 400mm in height.

7. Turn over material and mark from the top 500mm, draw another line 30mm below that line, measure another 300mm down , draw a line, measure 30mm down draw a line and so on....

8. You will notice we have 2 lines approximately every 300mm down material , this is our sewing lines, to form our pocket for our roman blind or roman shade. Bring those 2 lines together to form a pocket and clamp with sewing clamps. Sew along these lines to form your pocket on the back of the materials. Now put a 5cm hem on the bottom of your last panel ensuring that the panel still measures 300mm.

9. Now hem the top section ensuring that the panel measures 400mm, now sew Velcro tape at top section of material and put adhesive Velcro on a timber blind. Insert battons thru pockets on back of material, attach rings on back of every second batton , horizontal spacing should be approximately 300mm.

10. Cord roman blind or roman shade to right or left side ensuring that you allow enough cord for pulling up and down. Install on window, you now have a fully functionally roman blind

How to Make Your Own Roman Blinds

Roman blinds can really improve the look of your home. Even if you can't afford high quality blinds for your entire house you could always think about spending some money to make your own. Firstly, don't think it's complicated. With just a little sewing experience you will be able to make a complete set of blinds, and as each set becomes better with practice you will soon be making quality blinds to adorn your home. Roman blinds have an improved structure when they have wooden poles that sit between the slats, which support the blinds when they are raised or they can be constructed from 100% fabric and thus have no solid parts within the structure.

Almost always Roman blinds are fitted to a dust board that contains the string and pulley system that will ultimately lift the shades up. This is simply a 1 x 3inch piece of wood and the fabric is held around it via staples. The pulley mechanism is then screwed onto the wood. Finally, the strings are attached that will lift and lower the blinds. After making the dust board you will then have to make the Roman blinds. Should you desire the slatted type then simply measure your fabric to the length that you desire for each slat of the blinds and add an extra ½ - ¾ inch slat so that it becomes a closed piece of fabric for the wooden slat that sits inside the Roman blind. The slats don't need to specifically be any size but usually they're about 4-6 inches. In the event that you are following a pattern, the instructions you will guide you.

Making straight fabric Roman blinds is virtually the same process as for the slatted type with the exception that the fold on the side facing you (when finally hung) will have the actual fold on the inside to make the pleat. If you sew these pieces so that they are contained and then create a fabric loop. Of course the slatted type will hold wooden poles, whereas the fabric variety will create a simple pleat. If you follow the instructions on your pattern then you will readily be able to make Roman blinds that will be the envy of all your neighbours. Firstly, don't think it's complicated. Creating a Unique Style With a Roman Blinds

Roman blinds have a simple shape of a flat fabric panel corded vertically to pleat into neat horizontal folds. These offer versatility in a beautiful and practical way. They are best suited for practical areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and hallways that require light to filter into the room or to be blocked out completely. Operating the blinds is quite easy. You can pull them all the way to the top to allow maximum light into the room or you can leave them cascading for a stylish effect. They also have a slim line form, which makes it ideal for them to sit inside or outside the window alcove. This translates to less room needed for the window dressing. Hence, roman blinds are perfect for small or confined areas.

Roman blinds normally have simple shapes. This leaves great potential for creativity with other kinds of window dressing. These are best made from dense fabrics such as faux suede, linen, calico or leather although other fabric can still be used. Choice of fabric is very important since it will influence the blind style. Factors to consider include transparency, texture, color and pattern. They also differ in design therefore, you need to consider your window style before making your choice.

For most rooms the modern bamboo roman blind design is appropriate as a minimalist and stylish dressing. You can also choose vibrant and rich patterned fabric to create a statement. Indeed, there is no limit when it comes to roman blind styles. You can also opt for an ornate or eastern twist for your blinds. This can be done by adding beads, tassels or fringing to the blind tail. You can also have a band or border added to the blind from a contrasting fabric, which will help build interest and style. Use contrasting shades or textures for this to be more stylish. The band can also duplicate other patterns or fabrics used in the room for a unifying feel. The blind tail used should also reflect creativity. You can use the simple horizontal edge, fan, curve or embossed detail.

Roman blinds leave enough space for further window dressing. The blinds can be used as practical yet modest window cover, which allows you to be more creative with the other window features. This means the window can still be dressed with full curtains with added swag and tail draped all-round the pole for an elaborate design. Making Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are types of window treatments that, like curtains, hang from the top of a window frame. Bars that are horizontal in orientation are threaded at the back of the blind at measured intervals. To operate the blind, there is a cord that runs at the backside of the blind which are sewn from one end of the horizontal bars to another. Once you pull the cords, the bars are raised to the higher portion of the window which makes the fabric pleated. The cords should be secured if you want the blinds to remain raised. If you want to lower the blinds, release the cords and the blinds go down.

Why choose Roman blinds over any other window treatment? There are actually many reasons to do so. First, Roman blinds can be done by anyone who wants to do a DIY project. They are very economical to use because only a few materials are needed to make them. They also look polished and do not really take up too much space as they are made to fit windows perfectly. Expensive fixtures such as curtain tracks are a thing of the past, since blinds can be fit to the frame just by using Velcro material.

Making Roman blinds is not that complicated. Simply have material (any fabric) and measure it so that you can leave a 5 centimeter (width) and 10 centimeter (length) margin. You will also need five rods that should be thin and trimmed to measure the exact width of the blind. Don't forget to hem the sides of the materials to the width measurement. Hemming can be done by machine or hand stitching. Make sure that the hemming thread matches the color of the material to make it discreet.

Then, you need to make rod pockets for the blinds. Measure the same width of lining material as the main material. Cut strips measuring 9 centimeters of the lining material, and fold the lining in half vertically and fold each side to meet in the center. Now, you have the rod pockets. Stitch them through the open end unto the rear end of the blind. Leave one end of the pocket open so that you can thread the rod in this end. The bottom of the pocket should be hemmed by 2 centimeters. Check the length against the window to make sure that the exact length is followed. Then, attach the Velcro by sewing its rough side across the blind's top. Secure a wooden rod, fix it to the window frame using screws, and stick the Velcro to it.

Go back to the 5 thin rods and sew a tiny ring to each rod's end, measuring up to 2 centimeters in from the edge. In the wooden rod where you attached the Velcro to, put eyelet screws at the same measurement as on the blind. Hang the blind so that you can measure the length of the cord needed. Once you measured the cord, threat it through the rings and attach it strongly to the bottom rod. This can be done by tying to the ring securely. Tie the cords in such a way that they are long enough to hang down and easy to be pulled. Thread a large bead or cord weight to finish the cord. Attach a hook to the sides of the window where the cord could be wound for it to be secured.
